Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED)

Turning urban plans into investment and jobs

SUED helps Kenyan municipalities draw up economic plans and attract the money to carry them out. It is a seven-year, £43m programme funded by the UK government and managed by FSD Kenya.

How SUED works

SUED works with municipalities to prepare urban economic plans. Each is drawn up through consultation with residents and local businesses, and identifies investments that are ready to be financed. The plans feed into investment profiles that set out each opportunity for private and public investors, mostly in climate-resilient infrastructure and agricultural processing.

The programme runs for seven years and is managed by FSD Kenya. Its results are recorded in case studies, lessons learned and best-practice papers, so that other counties, donors and development programmes can see what worked and what did not.

For residents, the point is work. The deals signed so far are expected to create 68,585 jobs. SUED's video stories visit, among other places, an avocado oil processing plant and a fruit drying facility.
