Chart of the week: Credit in Kenya, who uses it and who provides it?

July 14th, 2016

This chart examines the usage and sources of credit in Kenya from the 2016 FinAccess household survey.

The plot on the left displays the percentage of adults by wealth group who reported to be currently using a loan from a range of formal and informal providers. An adult could have reported using a loan from more than one source so the totals across bars do not add up to 100 percent. An estimated 34 percent of the adult population was currently using a loan at the time of the survey, 15.6 percent was using formal loans and 24 percent was using informal loans.

In the survey, among  2,727 adults who reported currently using at least one loan, data on 3,973 individual loans was captured (an average of 1.5 loans per borrower). The plot on the right displays the the distribution of all the loans currently in use by provider and by the wealth group of the borrower.
