This year’s lecture titled “Financing Kenya: 2020 hindsight for Vision 2030” was delivered by Dr. David Ferrand. David is a long-time observer of the Kenyan financial sector. He played a key role in FSD Kenya’s inception nearly 20 years ago and served as its director until June 2019.
David’s lecture focussed on the past few decades of Kenya’s financial inclusion journey, with reflections on the kind of financial sector that might help deliver Kenya’s long term ambition to achieve middle-income status by 2030. The lecture was followed by a stimulating panel discussion moderated by Economist Anzetse Were of FSD Kenya. Members of the panel were Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, Safaricom’s Chief Officer for Financial Services; Maitri Capital Co-Founder Neha Shah; Nuru Mugambi, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA); Phyllis Wakiaga, CEO of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM); and David Ferrand himself.
Public interest in the 2019 edition was high. Financial sector participants were in good attendance at the lecture, among them policymakers, regulators, fintechs, consumer associations and researchers. Vibrant online engagement saw the event peak at number two on Twitter, topping national trends during a primetime slot typically dominated by the news of the day.
