Pension Sub-Sector Report - Lessons from FinAccess Surveys

November 25th, 2025

This report presents insights from the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey on access to and use of pension and retirement benefit schemes in Kenya. It highlights recent improvements in pension coverage, largely driven by policy reforms such as the NSSF Act, 2023, and underscores the growing importance of pensions in supporting income security and long-term financial stability.

Despite these gains, the report reveals persistent gaps in pension access and usage. Coverage remains low among informal-sector workers, women, rural residents, and low-income groups, while retirement savings remain a low priority for most Kenyans. Limited awareness, insufficient information, and unsuitable products remain key barriers, underscoring the need for more inclusive, flexible, and well-communicated pension solutions.
