Joan Karanja represents the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) as an observer.
Joan leads the inclusive markets and trade development portfolio for the Kenya bilateral strategy at the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi. Her role is to leverage on market opportunities to tackle systemic constraints to enable access to finance, markets and trade opportunities.
She has over 12 years’ experience of international development experience in market systems development, innovative finance mechanisms, inclusive trade and sustainable livelihoods for poverty alleviation.
Prior to joining the Embassy of Sweden, Joan developed solutions and led efforts in innovative markets and financial inclusion in fragile contexts. This included developing and implementing sustainable solutions that expand meaningful financial access for people in conflict crises and in forced displacement. Joan holds a Bachelor of Development Studies Degree and Master of Science in Development Studies Degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She is a certified Professional Mediator.
