Based on evidence from the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey, this report examines the role of Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) in Kenya’s financial inclusion landscape. It documents strong growth in SACCO membership and high levels of engagement in savings and credit, demonstrating the sector’s importance in helping households manage day-to-day needs, cope with financial shocks, and work toward longer-term goals.
However, the report also highlights key risks and constraints facing the sector. Affordability remains a major barrier for non-users, while digitalisation has introduced new consumer protection challenges, including system downtime and unethical practices. These findings provide important demand-side insights to inform regulation, strengthen consumer protection, and support the sustainable growth of SACCOs.
