Banking Sub-Sector Report - Lessons from FinAccess Surveys

November 25th, 2025

This report draws on findings from the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey to assess access to and use of banking, mobile banking, digital financial services and mobile money services in Kenya. It highlights steady progress in financial inclusion, including increased uptake of digital banking and the role of mobile money in driving inclusion, while showing how banks continue to play a key role in savings, education financing, and financial security.

At the same time, the report reveals persistent disparities across gender, age, and geography, with women, youth, and rural populations remaining less served. While digital channels have transformed banking usage and reduced reliance on cash, challenges related to affordability, financial health, consumer protection, and declining trust persist. Rising debt distress, fraud-related losses, and weaker complaint resolution highlight the need for stronger safeguards, improved financial literacy, and more customer-centric products to ensure inclusive, safe, and resilient banking services.
