KDIC Sub-Sector Report - Lessons from FinAccess Surveys

November 25th, 2025

This report examines the role of deposit insurance in advancing financial inclusion in Kenya, using findings from the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey. It highlights deposit insurance as a critical mechanism for safeguarding depositor funds in regulated financial institutions and building public confidence in the formal banking system, particularly in times of economic uncertainty.

The report identifies significant gaps in public awareness of deposit insurance, especially among rural populations who remain underrepresented in formal banking. It demonstrates how deposit insurance supports access, usage, quality, and stability within the financial system by encouraging savings and sustained engagement with regulated institutions. The findings reinforce the importance of consumer education, adaptive deposit protection frameworks, and strong resolution mechanisms to ensure deposit insurance remains relevant for both traditional and digital banking products.
