Case study - How Nakuru Housing Cooperative is securing land and housing for members

January 22nd, 2026

The Muungano wa Wanavijiji Nakuru West (now Nakuru Housing Cooperative) grew out of Muungano wa Wanavijiji’s efforts in the 1990s to mobilise informal settlement residents to meet their housing needs in Nakuru. The cooperative emerged from a group of market traders who had long navigated poor housing conditions, displacement, and poverty. Their core aim has been to secure land and housing, while also supporting each other through nine smaller self-help groups focused on welfare and food security.

In 2003, they purchased land with support from Muungano wa Wanavijiji’s financial arm, Akiba Mashinani Trust (AMT). Despite numerous challenges over the years, the group persisted. In 2024, AMT secured support from the Livelihood Impact Fund to finance a pilot project in Barut, Nakuru West, where the cooperative purchased additional land.
