This report provides in-depth analytical papers on the results of our first two financial access surveys conducted in 2006 and 2009. Among other topics, the papers contextualise the 2009 findings in relation to macro-level socio-economic trends in Kenya, as well as patterns of financial inclusion in the continent as a whole.

Chapter 1: Financial inclusion: Recent developments and lessons from Kenya - David Ndii David Ndii is an independent consultant in economic management. He has previously worked as economic advisor to the President of Rwanda, Chief Economist for Equity Bank, an economist with the World Bank, and taught at the University of Nairobi.
Chapter 2: FinAccess 2009: Trends, analysis and policy conclusions - Thorsten Beck Thorsten Beck is professor of Economics and Chairman of the European Banking Center at Tilburg University in the Netherlands as well as Research Fellow at CEPR, London. Previously, he worked at the World Bank. His research has focused on financial development and penetration issues. 
Chapter 3: Investigating the impact of access to financial services on household investment - Karen Ellis, Alberto Lemma and Juan-Pablo Rud Karen Ellis leads the Business and Development
Programme at the Overseas Development Institute. Prior to
that Karen worked at the UK’s Department for International
Development (DFID), HM Treasury, and as a consultant on
financial sector issues.

Alberto Lemma is a Research Officer in the Business and
Development Programme at the Overseas Development
Institute, and previously worked in consultancy in Vietnam
and Cambodia.
Chapter 4: Informality and market development in Kenya’s financial sector - Markku Malkamaki
Markku Malkamaki is an independent consultant
specialising in microfinance and development finance. He
has previously worked with MicroSave and Decentralised
Financial Services in Kenya.

 

Chapter 5: Financial exclusion in Kenya: Examining the changing picture 2006-2009 - Susan Johnson and Steven Arnold   Susan Johnson is a lecturer at the Centre for Development Studies, University of Bath. She has specialised in the fields of microfinance, gender and impact assessment.

Steven Arnold is a researcher in the Department of
Economics at the University of Bath. His research interests are mainly based around environmental valuation and decision-making, as well as wider issues of sustainability.

Chapter 6: Spatial dimensions of the financial sector in Kenya 2006-2009 [16.2MB] - Cyril Fouillet and Susan Johnson   Cyril Fouillet is Wiener-Anspach post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Oxford. He has an interest in the economic geography of monetary and financial practices including the spacial dimensions of financial inclusion in the global South.
